- Abstract
The article discusses the petroleum industry and environmental protest movements in the so-called petropolis areas of Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas, and Minatitlan-Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz in the 20th century. The article examines early silence about the environmental concerns posed by oil refineries as a result of local media and local governments reliant upon the industry. The article also discusses the impact of environmental hazards posed by oil refineries on poorer neighborhoods. It also examines how silence about environmental concerns broke down in the 1930s.
