- Abstract
The article discusses ecosystem-based zoning in the U.S., which is stated to possibly address several problems with its ocean policy by providing a mechanism for coordinated management of ocean uses. Past reports have highlighted the consequences of human activity on the marine ecosystems directly or indirectly. The article states that the declining state of the oceans is not the only conservation concern. It suggests that ecosystem-based integrated management activities are necessary to deal with the situation. It notes that important interconnections between human uses and the environment and across ecological and jurisdictional realms are being ignored. It says, the limited recovery of endangered species is an example of how the current regulatory framework can fail.
