- Abstract
Pécs was the fist city in Hungary to be European Capital of Culture. Before the title year, 2010, Pécs was relatively popular with domestic tourists but less known on the international tourism market. Due to the large investments and the variety of programmes, the cultural city character of Pécs strengthened, to the extent that now the name of the city is almost exclusively associated with cultural tourism, and other forms of tourism - MICE tourism, enological tourism etc. - are overshadowed. The success or unsuccessfulness of the programme is still debated; it takes years until all impacts can be fully evaluated.
