- Abstract
The article reports that Manchester merchant and financier Humphrey Chetham bequeathed five parish libraries for the use of the common people to establish public access. Topics include parish libraries were established in England as modern historians cannot agree on repositories of religious or theological knowledge for secular works; and collegiate church to purchase books ‘for the common use of the parish' to have come to fruition in St Mary Magdalene church.
