The article presents the views of four historians concerning the lasting historical and cultural significance of the 1605 event known as the Gunpowder Plot, commemorated variously in festivals in Great Britain as Guy Fawkes' Night, the Fifth of November. It examines several cultural elements associated with the event including the idea of England as a Protestant country, society in general, and the event's impact upon writers such as William Shakespeare.
