- Abstract
The article considers soldiers' letters written by British soldiers during World War I. The author focuses on the correspondence of four soldiers: Rowland Feilding, who was an officer in the Coldstream Guards; Reggie Trench who was an officer in the Sherwood Foresters; his brother Herbert Trench who was a gunner in the Honourable Artillery Company; and Cyril Newman who was a private in the London Regiment. The author considers how the soldiers' accounts of life as a soldier often living in the trenches depended on their relationship with the recipient and feels that true accounts of life on the front lines is often only found by inference.
