- Abstract
The incidence of elder abuse has increased with the population of elders. Current estimates suggest 2 to 5 million elders have been abused, neglected, or exploited, and only one in every fourteen cases is reported. The majority of abusers are family members, often those with substance use issues, or those stressed by caregiving. Mental health issues are often present in both perpetrators of elder abuse and victims. Abuse also results in mental health issues. Education is key to address this intersection of mental health and elder abuse, and the public needs to learn how to recognize and report it. This article highlights the fore-mentioned problem, and showcases the National Center for Elder Abuse Roadmap, which contains a number of useful strategies for identifying and addressing mental health and elder abuse.
