- Abstract
In the industrialization process, many industrial structures were established to meet the needs of the society, but they subsequently lost their functions. These inactive industrial buildings, with their architectural and constructional features, have an important place in the urban memory and identity. Today, most of these industrial structures have either lost their functions, or have completely disappeared or are in the process of extinction. Due to developing technology, these buildings have become non-functional and to refunction them carries utmost importance in terms of urban memory and identity. Bringing these buildings back to life will make a great contribution to the urban memory, however during this refunctionalization proccess, the architectural characteristics of the area where the buildings are located and the social/cultural needs of the environment must be taken into account. Hasanpaşa Gazhanesi, located in Kadiköy district of Istanbul, is one of the important historical buildings of the region and until recently it was meeting the gas needs of the surrounding area. The establishment is now in the process of being brought back to life with new functions in order to serve the city once again. In this study, we will focus on Hasanpaşa Gazhanesi. The establishment is one of the most important old industrial buildings of Istanbul and it is in the process of being reintroduced to the city, and our goal is to contribute to the refunctioning and the sustainability of the building. We examined the refunctioning projects of the building in detail and we created a study based on literature review.
