WHY IS CONSERVATION MEDICINE IMPORTANT? A member of the Dublin Zoo veterinary team, Niamh Mc Gill MVB MSc Conservation Medicine, provides an overview of the concept of conservation medicine.
- Abstract
Conservation medicine is an interdisciplinary field that examines the interactions between animal health, human health, and ecosystems. It focuses on the preservation, protection, and restoration of the natural environment and wildlife while also addressing the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Conservation medicine recognizes the importance of functioning, healthy ecosystems in maintaining the health of all species. It requires collaboration among various disciplines, including microbiology, pathology, immunology, epidemiology, biology, zoology, ecology, botany, geography, land economy, and climatology. Veterinarians play a crucial role in conservation medicine, bringing their scientific expertise and technical skills to conservation programs. However, they also need to develop skills in communication, collaboration, policy-making, and the social sciences to effectively contribute to the field. Conservation medicine is essential in addressing the challenges of declining biodiversity and emerging diseases, and it requires a multidisciplinary approach to find solutions.
