Targeted therapies in veterinary oncology.

- Abstract
Surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy can be used to great effect in the management of companion animal tumours but there remains a need for the development of new therapies in veterinary oncology. Following the lead from human oncology, a number of targeted therapies (treatments that target specific molecular markers on cancer cells) have been developed for veterinary use. Two of the most effective and clinically relevant targeted therapies are Palladia® and Masivet®, which represent the new state of the art in the management of canine mast cell cancer. In this article we describe the development and more importantly the specific clinical application of targeted therapies in general practice, including Palladia® and Masivet®, Oncept®, a novel immunotherapy for canine melanoma and metronomic chemotherapy, the use of oral chemotherapy drugs to target blood vessel development in growing tumours.
