- Abstract
The article looks into the end the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1991 but not of the Soviet Union security and intelligence agency KGB. Topics discussed are efforts to establish an oversight and civic monitoring mechanism for the KGB, investigation into the failed coup in August 1991 and lustration of the role of KGB officers, potential use of KGB archives for historical justice to attack political opponents, political police functions of KGB and its Chekism ideology.
