- Abstract
The most used techniques for the surgical correction of dentofacial deformities through orthognathic surgery are Le Fort I osteotomies for the maxilla, and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO). Regarding the sagittal osteotomy, the presence of third molars must be tracked in the planned planning since they are in the osteotomy lines. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between unerupted third molars and the BSSO technique, evaluating the possible interferences and complications of the extraction performed in the transoperative period. For this, an integrative literature review was carried out in PubMed, Cochrane, and Lilacs databases, obtaining five final articles. The literature prior to 2018 advocated more frequently for the extraction at least six months before orthognathic surgery), and when we analyzed the current literature, we provided new evidence for the results. It has still not been possible to reach a consensus regarding an emergency protocol, as there are many factors to be considered, and it is up to the oral and maxillofacial procedure to assess the risks and benefits that each conduct may present, weighing from planning to execution, so that the treatment can restore aesthetics, phonetics, airway, and occlusion, as well as quality of life for the patient.
