The author examines the word tone and melody in a sung Serbian folk ballad "Sarajevski atentat." Topics discussed include the prosodic systems involved in the singing of folksongs such as language, metrical structure, and musical rhythm, observations on accents on monosyllabic words, and the neutralization of both rising and falling accents in the singing of this ballad.
