India has a very rich history of education system and it dates back to several millenniums. The present day Indian higher education system is a large system with third largest enrolments in the world after China and United States. India has a distinction of having the highest number of institutions for higher education in the world - almost four times that in the US and Europe and more than seven times the number of institutions in China. The quantum growth of Higher Education is spear- headed by the Universities, which are the highest seats of learning. The Universities comprise mainly of Students, Teaching and Non-Teaching staff. Teachers play a pivotal role in the teaching and learning process. They make a great difference on students' achievement, especially nowadays, when the importance of education for knowledge and information societies has been acknowledged worldwide. The non-teaching staff form an integral part of the university system. They are valuable partners in working with the university authorities and teaching staff. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced number of schemes to foster research in universities and colleges. The present study attempts to highlight the different research schemes available for teaching staff of the universities and to explore the possibilities of making them applicable to the qualified nonteaching staff as well. The study is based on secondary data available on the websites of UGC, MHRD, etc. The data related to the different research schemes introduced by UGC has been considered for the study.
