- Abstract
Pangolins, a unique and little-known animal, gained global attention less than a decade ago when they were recognized as the most trafficked wild mammals. However, there are still major gaps in our knowledge of their biology, ecology, and distribution. Pangolins are found in 53 countries, but their specific locations and populations are poorly understood, and local extinctions are feared. Conservation efforts have been hindered by the lack of effective monitoring methods and the ongoing demand for pangolins in both local and international markets. Despite these challenges, there is a growing community of stakeholders committed to pangolin conservation, and there is an opportunity to develop sustainable solutions that involve Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
