- Abstract
Children with combined difficulties in literacy and numeracy show cognitive deficits that have an impact on their school achievement as well as on their academic self-concept. In the present study the development of school achievement, cognitive functions (Baddeley's and Hitch's (1974) concept of the working memory and other features of the phonological processing relating to Wagner and Torgesen (1987)) as well as the development of the academic self-concept of children with learning disabilities is investigated. In a two-year longitudinal study, primary school children (at the beginning 8;9 years old) with (a) a mixed disorder of scholastic skills (n = 30, IQ ≥ 85), (b) broad learning disabilities (n = 15, IQ < 85) and (c) without any learning disabilities and at least normal intelligence (n = 55, IQ ≥ 85) were compared. Results show that scholastic deficits persist over time. No significant differences concerning their cognitive functions and their academic self-concept could be found between the two groups with learning disabilities. However, they differed significantly from the control group. Given the results at hand, it is discussed, to what extend children with learning disabilities can be considered a homogenous group.
