- Abstract
This article explores the meanings given to home and family relations by foster children placed in kinship care. In the past, the topic has not been studied in Finland. The article is situated in the fi eld of child welfare, family research and childhood studies. Theoretically, it is grounded in the concepts of permanence, continuity and negotiability of family relations. The data consists of interviews, social network maps and diaries of fourteen children placed in kinship care. The interviewed children were eight to twelve years of age. The fi ndings suggest that kinship care includes great advantages for children. Its main advantages are the feeling of permanence and continuity it brings to children's lives. Children have also contradictory perspectives on permanency and continuity of kinship care. Article shows that also the children's perspective on kinship care is valuable, and that deeper knowledge on the topic is still needed.
