- Abstract
Girls Engaged in Mathematics and Science (GEMS) promises to build a bridge between K-12 and informal learning environments through higher education pre-service education and research resulting in stronger collaborations, better communications and resources to encourage girls in mathematics and science endeavors and careers. This project outlines a cogent state and national partnership that will result in research on girls in mathematics and science courses using 21st Century professional development and resources to give girls, particularly those in rural underserved areas, digital media that inspires confidence and enjoyment of lifelong learning. This phase of the project 89 girls, grades 1-12, participated in one mathematics and one science lesson taught by eight of the hand-selected GEMS teachers.
