- Title
Las múltiples caras de la Inmaculada: religión, género y nación en su proclamación dogmática (1854).
- Authors
Blasco, Raúl Mínguez
- Abstract
The dogmatic proclamation of the Immaculate Conception in 1854 not only settled an old theological discussion but also provided new meanings to the Madonna figure in the troubled context of mid 19th century. The Immaculate turned into the main image of the reformed femininity model constructed by Catholicism in this time, was a key element in the ultramontane strategy of the papacy and played an important role in the nationalist discourse of the Spanish non-liberal politicians when the Catholic unity of the country was in question. This article will focus on the political derivations of these aspects.
