- Abstract
The introduction of the Baghdad railway project intensified German- Turkish relations and led to a brotherhood of arms WW1. Towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century the German-Turkish relations were based on a military and political fundament. But the people themselves knew little about each other. Only the accounts of travelling German officers could provide an overall view. At the same time Karl May wrote his famous Orient cycle from which can be assumed that it has been written without any experience of Orientalism. Karl May, who was highly respected and read by the younger generation and politicians, created a milestone in German literary history. His books have been printed as bestsellers. They not only provide a representation of the people of the Orient and of Islam, the local customs, and the cities; also Christianity and the self-representation of the Occident can be found, as well as comparisons between both cultures. The stereotypes produced by Karl May were probably a product of his fantasy, but also quite popular among young German readers at that time. The book From Baghdad to Istanbul provides information about the Ottoman area and was therefore in the eyes of German readers relevant for a representation of the other (Orient) and of the self Occident).
