- Title
The embodied aerial subject: Gendered mobility in British inter-war air tours.
- Authors
Millward, Liz
- Abstract
Liz Millward examines a cluster of books about air touring published in English in the period 1925–37. She argues that air touring was new, and collectively the books explained to the prospective passenger or leisure pilot what to expect from flying and which responses to the experience would be appropriate. The books can be read as defining an 'embodied aerial subject', a term which refers to an idealised way of occupying civil air space. Using this concept is a way to consider how most characteristics of the ideal were shared by women and men, but they also brought subtle gender distinctions to flying.
