- Abstract
Systemic fungal infections have high mortality and morbidity rates in neonates, especially in extremely low birth weight premature infants. Because of long-term parenteral nutrition, multiple antibiotic therapy and immune deficiency due to prematurity, premature babies are at risk for fungal infections. With emerging technologies viability border in premature infants is drawn lower gestational ages and increased use of antibiotics, invasive procedures and central catheters have brought an increase in fungal infection rates. In this article, the clinical and diagnostic features of fungal infections which can be seen during the neonatal period, was reviewed and compiled with the current literature.
