- Abstract
An ex situ latency experiment was performed with soil samples taken in the dry season from different emerging vegetation zones, both water and dry soil samples were taken on a single semipermanent herbaceous wetland in the Peninsula of Paria, Sucre State. The dry season overextended during the sampling year and further soil samples could be collected after a fire event. Water samples revealed the presence of cladocerans Chydorus pubescens, Diaphanosoma birgei, and Moina minuta, the cyclopoid copepods Mesocyclops meridianus, Metacyclops mendocinus, Microcyclops anceps, and the calanoid Prionodiaptomus colombiensis, all emerged on samples from the beginning of the dry season. From postfire dry season soil samples only individuals of D. birgei, M. minuta, and P. colombiensis emerged. All of the species found in latency were also at rainy season water samples. The survival of latent stages in studied microcrustaceans apparently is not affected by overextended dry period neither by fire event effects, since individuals continue to emerge and recolonized previously occupied sites in the rainy period.
