- Abstract
Return of the Conservatives to power in 1946, sparked a major confrontation between liberals and conservatives in various regions of Boyacá and Santanders, it was for having control of state institutions. This situation became more critical with the assassination of Liberal leader Jorge Eliecer Gaitan on April 9th of 1948. From this fact we appreciate two antagonistic movements, one hand the action of the masses who wanted to avenge the death of the populist leader, and on the other hand, the repressive operations of the government to try to control the public order situation. This dynamic has generated a particularly high rate of violence by the prosecution of the "chulavita" guard and police department who were dedicated to slips, torture, murder and banished to liberals and communists. Many of the inhabitants of liberal descent who lived in the northern of Boyaca departmen fled with their families at the foothills plains, in that place they consolidated popular resistance groups or groups of "bandits" under the guidance of several leaders including liberal : Franco Izasa Brothers, Bautista brothers, Eduardo Fonseca Galán, Guadalupe Salcedo, Eliseo Velásquez and others. In this text we aim to reflect on the political practices that led to liberal voters to migrate to the Eastern Plains - Casanare to become "bandits.".
