- Abstract
Pre-transfusion red cell phenotyping is an important procedure aiming to identify irregular alloantibodies, produced by sensitization to foreign antigens during transfusions. The objective is to evaluate the clinical records of a particular blood bank within Distrito Federal, which underwent a Coombs test and Antibody Screen positivity. The findings show that between January 2012 and September 2014, there was a 21% increase of anti-E, 20% increase of anti-D and 11% increase of anti-K antibodies. Of those who were alloimmunized, 73% were female and furthermore, 74% of them had gestational history. In terms of age, 63% of patients were aged over 60 years. Concurrently, it was also demonstrated that anaemia was the leading cause of transfusions - at 39%. Given the high occurrence of erythrocytic alloantibodies, phenotyping is vital in extending the antibody screen compatibility to the antigens of the Rh and Kell systems to reduce induces of transfusion reactions in patients alloimmunized.
