- Abstract
This paper evaluates the recently released Shape of the Australian Curriculum: The Arts (referred to as the Shape paper) and its pronouncement as part of this most recent attempt to create an effective National Arts Curriculum from Foundation to Year 12. The evaluation incorporates a review of the Draft Shape of the Australian Curriculum: The Arts (referred to as the draft paper), and is contextualized in contemporary discussions about the inclusion of music in school curricula. A consideration of the Shape paper identifies both advantages and disadvantages in the suggested framework. It has been found that Arts learning in schools is most successful when supported by rich, continuous and sequenced programs and the Shape paper argues strongly for this whilst also acknowledging the need for flexibility of implementation to accommodate local expectations and circumstances. It is hoped that this discussion will contribute to debate on the inclusion of music in school programs and in future national curricula.
