- Abstract
Disasters of human origin have taken their toll on the inhabitants of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It is for this reason that the quick provision of aid to affected people is crucial. This study concerns itself with the development, application, and testing of a relief supply pre-positioning optimisation model that can be used to improve the availability and accessibility of the required relief supplies for disaster-affected people in North and South Kivu of the DRC. The model integrates potential facility locations, multiple relief items, response times, and capacity restrictions while maximising the proportion of demand satisfied by the pre-positioned relief supplies. A sensitivity analysis was used to investigate the effect of different response times and distribution centre capacities on the proportion of demand fulfilled. Results indicate that, for higher facility storage capacities, the maximum allowable response time is inversely correlated to the number of facilities required. It is therefore important for decision-makers to use the model results to find a suitable balance between response time and the number of facilities.
