The article examines the textual tradition that focuses on the use of female exemplars in late-Qing textbooks for girls and women in China. It explains that the exemplars in the late-Qing materials challenge the division between tradition and modernity. It also mentions the significance of earlier instruction books to the educations of Chinese females in the twentieth century.
