- Abstract
Context: urinary infection associated with use of a catheter is a frequent problem and results from various factors. Aim: to carry out an integrative literature review to identify scientific evidence linking intermittent urinary catheter use with the occurrence of urinary tract infection. Method: the articles analyzed were published between 2001 and 2011 and published in full, in Portuguese and English, and were obtained using the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System online (MEDLINE), Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences health (LILACS) and Web of Science. Results: of 250 articles identified, eleven met the inclusion criteria established. Of these, nine addressed risk factors for the development of urinary tract infection (UTI). The predisposing factors for UTI development studied were: catheter use time, indication for use, insertion of catheter, sex, advanced age, underlying diseases, previous use of antibiotics, length of patient hospitalization, handwashing, quality of the equipment and the patientôs susceptibility. Conclusion: although it is part of routine clinical practice in nursing, study of the topic is limited in number and quality, which suggests the need for research in the area.
