- Abstract
This scientific commentary discusses the problem of functional localization in the human brain and the challenges faced by neuroscientists in identifying the neural substrates that facilitate higher order cognitive function. The article explores two traditional approaches to this problem: correlative network-based mapping and causal lesion-based mapping. The authors highlight the limitations of these approaches and propose a framework for combining electrical stimulation data with connectomes to improve the prediction of behavioral effects. The study conducted by Coletta et al. is presented as a demonstration of this framework, showing promising results in predicting impairments after surgery. The commentary concludes by acknowledging the heterogeneity of the structure-function relationship in individuals and suggesting the development of individualized maps based on connectivity patterns.
