- Title
Orientational Meliorism in Dewey and Dōgen.
- Authors
Stroud, Scott R.
- Abstract
The article presents the American pragmatist John Dewey and the Zen Buddhist Dōgen schools of thought on moral cultivation. The author argues that Dewey presents a useful notion of moral development and growth. This notion focuses on a person's attentiveness to one's situation. However, the author notes that Dewey left out a possible extended analysis of how a person is going to foster such orientation. The author argues that methods of Zen Buddhism can supplement the Deweyan moral theory.
