- Abstract
This article presents an attempt to conceptualise the informational structure of books. However, what are the features of artefact that distinguish it as a whole and singular object? In terms of informational integrity, different artefacts have different relevant characteristics. The distinguishing one is the precondition of preservation. Despite simplicity, it is not easy to answer the question regarding, what we are going to preserve - text, paper, volume, -etc. The material object (artefact) is in principle a limitless source of information. Two possibilities can be distinguished for describing the information structure of communicative artefacts. The most intelligible and common is the model, where the information in the publication is divided by dichotomy - the content and the carrier. The publication itself is considered to consist of content in its widest sense and material carrier. The use of a dichotomous model results in the abstraction of content from artefact and it is claimed that, in most cases, only information is the real object of preservation. Such a dichotomous model is either formally or informally taken as a ground for many preservation activities. Microfilming, digitalization and other information reformatting methods greatly proceed from the precisely identical theoretical model. In case of multilevel model, different information levels are distinguished in the artefact. Different authors have come out with various approaches for describing the information in connection with artifacts. This study is based on a three-level model, according to which three different information levels are distinguished: structural information or structural properties; functional information or functional properties; context and the object's relationship to its context.
