- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To describe the demographic and histopathological characteristics of patients diagnosed with basal cell carcinomas located on the head in a dermatological center at Quito, Ecuador. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A transversal descriptive study was carried out in patients diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma on the head in a dermatological center at Quito, Ecuador, from September 2019 to September 2021, and were described according to gender, age, skin phototype, head anatomical subunit and histopathological subtype. RESULTS: Two hundred twenty-three cases were obtained. The age group from 61 to 81 years was the most affected by this type of skin cancer. Phototypes III and IV were the most frequently reported. The nose and cheeks were the most frequent anatomical subunits, and the most common histopathological subtype was nodular. CONCLUSIONS: This study obtained results very similar to those previously described in other countries. However, the most frequently reported skin phototypes in our patients were III and IV, a finding that may be related to the ethnic composition of our population.
