- Abstract
In March 2022, the EU activated the Temporary Protection Directive for the very first time. It thereby led to a comprehensive privileging of Ukrainian refugees over other refugees in Germany in terms of their migration status as well as social law. We combined legal considerations with psychological ones, asking whether there might be a greater sense of solidarity among the German population towards Ukrainian refugees than towards Syrian refugees. This question was investigated by means of a pre-registered online survey (N=252). We tested the hypothesis that intergroup contact is associated with more solidarity behavior and that this is related to stereotypes, cultural similarity and social identification. The data confirm the assumption that Ukrainians experience more solidarity than Syrians and are perceived as warmer, more competent and more culturally similar to Germans.
