- Abstract
Objective: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) occurs frequently in women during the reproductive period. The serotonergic abnormality is thought to be in foreground etiologically, because of the characteristics of its symptoms. We aimed to study, whether thrombocyte serotonin levels are different between PMDD and healthy control groups. Methods: Twenty patients who were daignosed with PMDD after two months follow up and 20 healthy controls were included the study. Depression and anxiety levels of the subjects were determined in follicular and luteal phases. Venous blood samples were obtained during both phases. Thrombocyte serotonin levels were measured by High Pressure Liquid Cromotography-Electrochemical Detector method. Results: Depression and anxiety levels of PMDD group were higher than control group in both phases. Thrombocyte serotonin levels were not different between PMDD and control groups in both phases. Thrombocyte serotonin levels were higher during follicular phase than luteal phase in both groups. Conclusion: According to our results the serotonergic abnormality, that was claimed to be important in PMDD etiology, was not in thrombocyte serotonin levels which reflect the serotonin levels in central nervous system. This abnormality may be associated with serotonergic postsynaptic receptor response.
