- Abstract
The article discusses government regulators' management of the 2008 crisis in the U.S. banking industry and policy of bailouts for financial institutions deemed too big to fail. The forced merger of Bear Stearns investment bank into JP Morgan Chase with a $29 billion troubled assets guarantee from the Federal Reserve Board is discussed along with the collapse of the collateralized mortgage obligations (CMOs) market, rescue of American International Group (AIG) Inc., and bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers. The resolution of Continental Illinois Bank in the 1980s financial crisis is also discussed.
