- Abstract
The CarboBreak project of the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) investigates the fracture behavior of carbon fibers and the release of alveolar-accessible fragments under mechanical stress. Various types of carbon fibers were characterized and a method for investigating splinter fractures was developed. The carbon fibers were processed into fiber semi-finished products and composites to determine the release of fragments. Workplace measurements were carried out to determine the concentrations of lung-accessible fibers. The project aims to provide recommendations for work practices and personal safety as well as optimized process parameters.
