An essay is presented which examines the career of Chinese stage actor Mei Lanfang, noted for his work as a "dan" (female roles) player, and discusses how his mustache was a symbol of masculinity and resistance to Japanese aggression. It explores how Mei's depiction of Chinese women on stage were compared to his male persona off stage as well as how his dramatic characters displayed female masculinity.
