- Title
Staffordshire Hoard Item Number 550, A Ward Against Evil.
- Authors
Hawk, Brandon W.
- Abstract
The article discusses item number 550 in the Anglo-Saxon Staffordshire Hoard, which is a piece of gold with a Latin inscription on it which is derived from the Book of Numbers in the Bible. A verse from Numbers and one in Psalm 67:2 are compared and the differences are explored, particularly the Latin translations of the texts. The text "Vita S. Antonii," which is about Saint Athanasius, is noted because the saint uses psalms to fight demons. In the "Vita S. Guthlaci," Saint Guthlac also used words to drive demons away.
