The article discusses the use of Holtzmann's law or sharpening in identifying the Norse-derived texts recorded in Old English manuscripts. The contrast between the Old English treow(i)an and Old English<getryccað> offers a very good testing ground for the different results of sharpening in West and North Germanic languages.
