- Title
THE SOURCES FOR /ELFRIC'S EASTER SERMON: THE HISTORY OF THE CONTROVERSY AND A NEW SOURCE.
- Authors
Leinbaugh, Theodore H.
- Abstract
The article informs that it has been argued that the publication of "Sermo de Sacrificio in Die Pascae" marks the beginning of English studies. First published in 1566 or 1567 under the supervision of Archbishop Matthew Parker, the text unquestionably provoked centuries of theological debate between Protestants and Catholics and gave the study of the English language an importance that had previously been accorded only to the classical languages. Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Protestants cited the book as ancient evidence against the doctrine of transubstantiation.
