- Abstract
A literary criticism of the novel "Charlotte Temple" by Susanna Rowson is presented, focusing on the elements of age and consent. Topics include relation between heroine Charlotte's young age and her legal vulnerability to seduction; her seduction with her sixteenth birthday which is the age at which girls could legally consent to elopement, sex and marriage, but fathers could void the marriages of minor daughters; and the inadequacy of laws against sexual violence.
