- Title
Policy on Prevention of Sports-related Orofacial Injuries.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's policy on the prevention of sports-related injuries to the mouth and face. It states that 10-39 percent of all dental injuries in children are sports-related, with children between the ages of seven and 11 years being the most susceptible to sports-related oral injuries. It mentions that the use of mandatory protective equipment is demonstrated to significantly reduce dental and facial injuries. It comments that the upper lip, maxilla, and maxillary incisors are affected by the majority of sport-related dental and orofacial injuries. It talks about problems children can have with properly-fitted mouth-guards due to the exfoliation of primary teeth and the eruption of permanent teeth.
