- Abstract
Several studies associate the effect of pesticides as a risk factor for the occurrence of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). TEA is a syndrome that causes neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by marked difficulties in behavior, social interaction, communication and sensory sensitivities. It has its cause not yet established and several factors are related to its involvement. Objective: To identify an association between exposure to pesticides before conception and / or during the gestational period with a suggestive contribution to the occurrence of ASD. Method: Population-based control case study. The sample consisted of 225 individuals, of which 56 were mothers with children diagnosed with ASD, interviewed in the CAPSi of Cuiabá and Várzea Grande and in the AMA of Cuiabá; and 169 controls interviewed in the education network of the respective municipalities. Socioeconomic information on environmental exposures and pesticides were obtained through a standardized questionnaire. A bivariate and stratified analysis was performed using as a risk measure the odds ratio with 95% confidence interval and chi-square test. Stratified analysis was performed to select the main confounding or interaction variables. Finally, the logistic regression was performed considering all the variables when the crude and stratified analyzes presented pvalues lower than 0.10, maintaining in the final model the variables with significance level less than or equal to 0.05 or those considered of importance, a priori, according to the literature. Results: Work place of the mother near the rural area (OR: 3.75, CI: 95% 1.72-8.13), Daily household insecticide use (OR: 3.81, CI 95% (OR: 3.55, CI: 95% 1.61-7.81), Morava close to industry, rural area and / or garimpo (OR: 2, 54, CI: 95% 1.00-6.53) and had during the gestational period Diabetes and / or Hypertension (OR: 2.66, CI: 95% 1.01-7.13) were associated with the development of TEA.
