- Abstract
Self-medication consists of the selection or use of drugs by individuals to treat selfdiagnosed pathologies, or symptoms, without prescription or supervision by a doctor or dentist. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an increase in drug use and most often over-the-counter. Against this background, the present work aimed to verify the impacts of self-medication during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic and to analyze its influence on this behavior. The study is descriptive, retrospective, considered an integrative literature review, carried out through a search of original articles, in English and Portuguese, available in full, published in the period from 2020 to 2023 in the LILACS and MEDLINE database. In this sense, with the evidence presented in this review, the article aims to demonstrate how much self-medication was harmful to the population in the period of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the ways in which this selfmanagement occurred in various spheres, for example, in patients who had chronic, psychiatric and rheumatological diseases.
