- Abstract
Candida parapsilosis is a yeast-like fungus that is among the species that cause cutaneous candidiasis. It is an organism that has a predominant pathological development in immunocompromised patients, especially in hospital environments. Cutaneous candidiasis is more prevalent in warmer areas of the body and with folds, such as: armpits and groin. Topical and/or oral antifungals are currently used for treatment. However, the species Candida parapsilosis has shown resistance to conventional antifungals. This makes research necessary for the development of new therapeutic options. Among the research already carried out, the use of medicinal plants stands out, among them the species Byrsonima crassifolia, given the antifungal responses of different extracts against fungi of the genus Candida sp. Objectives: To create a topical formulation based on the hydroalcoholic extract of Byrsonima crassifolia leaves and submit it to quality control tests. Methods: For this, the procedures for collecting, drying and grinding the leaves were carried out, followed by obtaining the hydroalcoholic extract through maceration. The extracting solution used was a hydroalcoholic mixture containing absolute ethanol and distilled water in a ratio of 70:30 (v/v). The hydroalcoholic extract (EHB) was submitted to phytochemical and antifungal analysis, and later used as an active ingredient in an antifungal cream developed with 5% EHB and base cream (qsp 100%). The cream was submitted to tests evaluating its organoleptic characteristics (color, odor and visual aspects) through macroscopic evaluation, pH measurement with the aid of a pH meter, density through the apparent density method, centrifugation and thermal stress through the gradual increase in temperature. Results: The EHB presented a MIC of 1mg/mL. A cream was obtained based on the hydroalcoholic extract of the leaves of Byrsonima crassifolia with pH 5.7, density 0.90 g/mL, organoleptic characteristics specific to the formulation, there was no phase separation in the centrifugation test and it remained resistant to thermal stress up to 55 °C. Conclusion: The results obtained demonstrated the feasibility of using Byrsonima crassifolia as a source of compounds with antifungal activity and the possibility of developing an antifungal cream from its extracts. This work contributes to the knowledge about the pharmacological properties of plants native to the region, as well as to the development of new drugs.
