- Abstract
The study aimed to identify complications related to the use of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) by newborns and children. Integrative literature review conducted in the PUBMED, SciELO and LILACS databases, via the Capes portal, using the following descriptors: Newborn/Newborn; Child/Child; Catheter/Catheter; Central Venous Catheterism/Central Venous Catheterization; nursing/Nursing and Complicações/complications, using the Boolean operator "and". After considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 14 articles published between 2011 and 2022 were selected to compose the study. The analyzes of the studies showed that the insertion and handling of the PICC involves risks and the rate of complications is still high, the most frequent being: obstruction, poor positioning of the tip, infection, traction, extravasation and phlebitis, highlighting the need for continued training to better prepare the nursing team, given that these professionals are responsible for developing this technique.
