- Abstract
Organizational managers adopt actions that block approximation with political and social actors (buffering posture) and actions that create strategic bridges (bridging posture). However, the literature on stakeholders provides scarce information about the engagement between micro and small companies and their public. The research investigated the determining factors of buffering and bridging activities in micro and small companies. Using a sample of 160 companies, hypotheses based on environmental contingency, resource dependence, corporate social responsibility, and the theoretical approach of stakeholders were tested. The analysis process was structural equation modeling. It was found that organizational power did not determine any posture and that environmental uncertainties and the strategic initiative of managers determined bridging and buffering. The strategic pioneering spirit of managers was the most important factor for the bridging posture, but when facing uncertainties, companies protect themselves more intensely from the demands of social stakeholders than from the political ones.
