- Abstract
The article presents information on the non-human character called Sqewtómuhs (Swamp Woman) in the folklore of Maliseet Indians, which is a woman who mostly appears when someone is about to die or when a new baby was born. The author made a research on the appearance of this benevolent character in Maliseet narratives. A comparison of this character between Maliseet and passamaquoddys sources is provided. The use of the tradition of this Swamp Woman by Maliseet families and its function are explored.
