- Abstract
The article discusses the tension between indigenous Mayan groups living on the Montes Azules conservation land in Mexico and the government department Comisión Nacional de Areas Naturales Protegidas (CONAP). It describes CONAP's intention to rezone areas of the conservation land and its efforts to displace Mayan communities on the land. It then discusses the efforts by the Social Forum of Montes Azules to resist government intrusion into the land. Other subjects under discussion include international ecotourism to Montes Azules and its effect on government policy on conservation, the problem of deforestation, and the Rancho Corozal community.
